Many constituents across Swansea East will be aware that over the last few years I’ve organised a series of summer lunch clubs to help ensure kids living in our communities don’t go hungry during the school holidays.
Many children who rely on free school meals during term-time don’t have this to fall back on during the long 6-week summer holiday. Having lunch may not seem like something many people have to worry about day-to-day but there are far too many parents across Swansea East for whom this is sadly the case.
I’ve teamed up with many different local and national organisations to organise lunch clubs again this year because I believe holiday hunger is a scourge our society must see the back of.
Over the summer months, I’ll be keeping a summer lunch clubs diary twice a week to let you know how it’s all going and to tell you a little bit more about some of the many fantastic organisations who are supporting our efforts.
This week, our clubs have been flooded with children who may otherwise have had to go without a hot meal. On Thursday, one of our venues alone had over 100 children turn up to receive a free lunch. While I love seeing the kids’ smiling faces and their positive outlook on life, the sheer number of people we’re now supporting underlines just what pressure our communities are now under.
If you’d like to make a donation to help with our efforts, even a small amount of the following would be greatly appreciated:
Baked beans
Tinned spaghetti
Hot dog sausages
Instant mash
Dried pasta
Pasta sauce
Tinned corned beef
Dried rice
Jars of mild curry sauce
Tinned meatballs
Squash
Any and all donations can be dropped off at my constituency office: 485 Llangyfelach Road, Brynhyfryd, Swansea, SA5 9EA. Please feel free to call my office on 01792 462054 for more information.
I’ll be back next week with my next diary update!
