It’s official: this week has been our busiest set of kid’s lunch clubs ever, with a staggering 2,200 hot and cold meals being distributed across Swansea East. On the one hand, it’s great that we’ve been able to reach out to more kids than ever before to ensure they don’t go without. On the other hand, this record is slightly bittersweet given it highlights just what a big problem holiday hunger has become across far too many of our communities. While this sadly does continue to be a problem within our society however, I’ll be continuing to work with my brilliant team of volunteers and partner organisation to take some of the strain off families in need over the summer months.
Team sandwich has been very busy this week, beavering away at our HQ – Boss Brewery – to create packed lunches which we’ve then been dropping off at community centres and clubs across the constituency. We’ve certainly had to battle the elements to get our deliveries out this week. You won’t have failed to notice that the typical British summer weather has returned and we’ve been battling wind and rain to get our lunches to the kids who need them. As ever though, we’ve had a superb team of volunteers on hand to ensure things ran like clockwork. I know that the kids and their parents have really appreciated every bit of effort which has gone into this and there’s nothing better than seeing their faces as we drop off our latest shipment of lunches.
Across the constituency, we’ve fed kids in Blaenymaes, St. Thomas, Cefn Hengoed, Manselton, Bonymaen, Penlan, Morriston, Port Tennant, Llansamlet, Portmead, Clase and beyond. This simply wouldn’t have been possible without the numerous donations we’ve had from members of the public and local organisations and businesses to ensure our supplies stay stocked up. Whether it’s filling for the sandwiches, bottles of water, or supplies of tinned hot dogs for our hot lunches, the quantity of food we’ve gone through this year so far has been enormous.
Once again I’d like to thank everyone who has helped out so far this summer to support our work. We’ve got some very exciting plans for the final few weeks and would, of course, welcome any further donations people are able to make if you have anything spare in your weekly shop. A full list of items we’re looking for is available below.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
