BBC Wales Interview on WRU

February 23rd 2026

On February 23rd, I spoke with BBC News following confirmation that local rugby clubs have formally called an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Welsh Rugby Union.

This has not come out of nowhere. The WRU Board has allowed uncertainty, confusion and frustration to grow for weeks, while clubs, supporters and communities have been left without straight answers about the future of the Ospreys and professional regional rugby in Neath and Swansea.

In my interview, I said there has been no clarity for clubs or supporters. That is simply not acceptable. Decisions of this magnitude must not be made behind closed doors, and the WRU Board must stop treating supporters and grassroots clubs as an afterthought.

The Ospreys are not just a professional team. They are embedded in our communities, supporting young people and families across the region through initiatives like Ospreys In The Community. The impact of losing professional regional rugby here would be felt far beyond the pitch.

The WRU Board now needs to show leadership, be honest about its plans, publish the evidence behind its decisions, and engage properly with those affected. Welsh rugby deserves better than secrecy and uncertainty.
