MP calls for wider mounjaro access on NHS

January 7th 2026

On January 7th, I appeared on Good Morning Britain to speak about my experience with weight-loss medication and why access should not be based on BMI alone.

For many people, weight affects far more than appearance. It can impact mobility, chronic pain, surgery waiting lists and overall quality of life. These broader health factors matter and should be considered when making decisions. I have tried many different approaches over the years, including various diets and weight-loss programmes. What finally worked for me helped me take back control of my health, alongside medical support and lifestyle changes. However, it is not easily affordable or accessible for everyone.

Prevention is vital. We must continue to improve access to healthy food, support physical activity and tackle the impact of ultra-processed foods. But prevention alone does not help everyone who is already living with weight-related health conditions. Weight-loss medication should be considered as one part of a broader, medically supported approach to health, with strong safeguards and proper clinical oversight. It should not be treated as a lifestyle choice.

I also spoke about this issue in an article for BBC News, where I outlined why we need a system that considers the whole person, rather than relying on a single measure to determine access to support. This should never be about one solution alone. We need prevention, support and treatment working together, so people can access the right help at the right time.
