Which?’s campaign to challenge Whirlpool on the slow progress modifying
their fire risk dryers has been supported by over 75,000 people. These
fire risk dryers have reportedly been linked to 750 fires posing a
potential threat to people homes. Whirlpool’s slow progress modifying
their dryers is totally unacceptable and I have raised this very issue in
Parliament.
This week Which? has succeeded in forcing Peterborough Trading Standards
(PTS) to take action against Whirlpool following Which?’s issuing of a
claim for judicial review last December. As a result of PTS enforcement
notices, Whirlpool has now updated the tumble dryer safety advice on its
websites. Although this is progress Which? believes that Whirlpool must
now recall their tumble dryers.
This long running issue highlights fundamental weaknesses with the product
safety system as it shouldn’t take the threat of legal action to get the
regulator to take action to stand up for consumers safety. I am now
supporting Which?’s campaign and Andy Slaughter MP’s petition to force a
debate in Parliament about the ongoing Whirlpool safety issue and the
product safety system and I urge you to do the same.
Join me and over 45,000 members of the public to urgently demand a debate
