Following a major fire at the Grenfell Tower residential block in West London, which began in the early hours of Wednesday morning (14 June) and where a number of fatalities have been confirmed, the Shadow Home Office released the following statement from Shadow Minister Carolyn Harris.
“Like so many others, I was in shock this morning as I learned of the horrific events unfolding at Grenfell Tower.
“Six fatalities have been confirmed, with more than 70 injured. My thoughts are with all the victims and their families at this devastating time.
“I would like to pay thanks to the emergency services who are still working both at the scene and in hospitals across London treating the injured. Once again our firefighters, paramedics and police officers have displayed great heroism by running toward danger to save as many lives as possible. Their bravery and professionalism whilst witnessing such tragic scenes is truly admirable.
“The outpouring of kindness displayed in North Kensington today where people are providing food, water, clothing and shelter to the residents and emergency service workers is indicative of the strong communities we have here in the UK.
“I have been in close contact with London Fire Brigade and the Fire Brigade Union throughout today and will continue to do so throughout their investigation.”
